Every pet hatches with a base weight that grows as the pet ages. Heavier pets of the same species trade for more because weight is visible to both sides of a trade and is hard to farm quickly. A pet at the top of its weight range can be worth several times a low-weight version of the same pet, which is why weight is checked before almost every serious trade.
Traders group pets loosely into low, average, high, and huge weight bands. Anything at or above the huge band carries a premium on top of the pet's base value.
